Tornado Safety Tips

In light of some more recent tornado activity in the South, and more strong storms moving this way, we wanted to post a blog to help you prepare yourself for this present danger. About a year ago, we wrote a blog with safety tips during a tornado and this seemed like an appropriate time to re-post.

One of the main concerns during the late spring and summer months in Georgia and surrounding states are Tornados.  It seems like a long time ago, but it was only three years ago last March that a tornado ripped through downtown Atlanta later at night, causing significant damage to buildings we thought were impenetrable.  I was actually downtown at the Georgia dome the afternoon before the storm, and the last thought on my mind was that just six hours later, large screws and parts of the ceiling would be falling down!  I'm sure we all remember seeing the footage of water flowing through the congress center.

So, we thought it would be prudent to give some quick safety tips to remember before and during a tornado.  These were compiled from a couple of different websites (tornadochaser.net, weather.com) of tornado experts.

1.  If you are in a car, do NOT find shelter under an overpass. I always thought this was one of the safer places to be if you were stranded outside in a tornado, but this is not the case. Each of the websites above said that the best place to be, if you were stuck outside, is lying facedown in a ditch or a place on very low land.  The overpass basically becomes a wind tunnel during a storm!

2.  Damage happens when wind gets inside a home through a broken window, door, or damaged roof. Keep windows closed. Houses do not explode due to air pressure differences. Stay away from windows during severe storms. Flying debris could shatter the glass and cause injury

3. It used to be advised to go to the southwest corner for safety; however, the southwest corner of a house is no safer than any other corner. The safest place is a room in the middle of the house or a basement.  Anywhere away from windows and away from clutter.  My room is our master bedroom closet, which is also good because I have a stash of Entertainment Weekly magazines in there to keep us entertained during the storm.  I need to know what movie Angelina Jolie is filming next!!

4. Prepare! Be sure to have a flashlight that you can plug in somewhere in your safe room and buy a weather radio that keeps you advised of the situation!
