One of the five scariest days* in my life was when my mom called me about two months before I graduated from college and told me that I was going to have to get my own auto insurance policy to cover the beauty of the Jeep Cherokee I drove around. Wait, what? My main concern on most days was if the cafeteria would have Cinnamon Rolls for dessert; now I had to actually think about something aside from food, movies & trying to win over a girl's heart? "Yes," she said. "It's time. It's also time for you to graduate. You've been there five years and you are not a doctor."
It was terrifiying as I sat down at my desk later that evening, looking at my parent's auto insurance policy and not understanding one single word of it. Not one! Liability, uninsured liability, comprehensive, loss of use, collision, cinnabuns, pizza; all of these words were just a big jumble in my head. Thankfully, I had an independent insurance agent who helped me understand this lingo (and made me dinner when I visited home - thanks Mom!) and helped me get the right coverage for Ole Bessie, which is what I just named my Jeep Cherokee.
We are going to start a series of blogs that will simplify the language on the auto policy and hopefully help you understand it a little better. Every day, I speak with someone on the phone, a current client or a new prospect, who does not understand what all of these coverages on the policy mean. It's no surprise because this is not something that they teach in school, unless you are in the risk management program, and let's be honest here, who chooses to go to college to be in insurance? So, the lack of understanding is completely, well, understandable. That's what this series of blogs is going to do - help you understand what all of those different parts of your insurance policy do and mean. Call it insurance for smart people from a dummy (that would be me). Since I'm not the brightest fish in the desert, I figure I can explain this complicated insurance in a way that everyone can understand!
Check back later this week for lesson number one - LIA-what?

*three of the other days involved me trying to talk to girls on the phone. Never went over very well. Thankfully, my now wife called me first. the fourth day involved the circus and clowns,
